Volunteers to the Rescue

The West Australian 1/12/05
"I was unfortunate enough to be the victim of a king wave which swamped my 6m fishing boat south of Rottnest last week.

I was fishing alone but had all the necessary equipment that is standard to fish in comfortable safety offshore. However, as I soon discovered, all this equipment may be of no use if it is inaccessible when your hull is upside down and your boat is full of water.

I am not a religious man but I cannot be thankful enough for whatever it is in our nature that drives certain people to be selfless enough to volunteer to join rescue groups. Not only do they put themselves in relative danger, but they sacrifice time with family, time for their own recreation and I am sure there is a monetary sacrifice as well, to be there for people in need – and trust me, when you have a boating accident alone offshore, you are very much in need.

I will be eternally grateful to the three men who came to my aid, as will be my family and friends.

I also say thank you to Fremantle Sea Rescue organisation and all its volunteers. My membership and donations will go on much longer that my boat owning days. The professionalism, concern and reaction time of the rescue was unbelievable, not only as a rescue operation but also support with salvage, police and repairs which was second to none.

I urge everyone who owns a boat, uses a boat or just gets the odd fillet of the neighbour’s fish to give their support to these guys whenever you see them drumming up funds."

"We were in quite a predicament being completely disabled with both propellers and shafts severely damaged, taking water at an alarming rate and dragging anchor. By my reckoning R100 arrived within 10-12 minutes of my distress call and the prompt action of your crew saved my vessel from sinking. I shudder to reflect on the loss of several hundred thousand dollars and, more importantly, the risk of exposure to the seven of us on board."
